223 (5.56) Ammo

.223 Remington ammunition and 5.56x45 NATO are closely related and sometimes interchangeable cartridges depending on the firearm they are to be used with. Manufacturers typically offer guidance on this point. In general, the 5.56 NATO ammunition the military uses and is for sale to the civilian market operates at higher pressures than .223 Remington ammo. Most, but not all, AR-15s are chambered for 5.56 NATO and can fire both types of ammo.

Many loads in both calibers follow the M193 or M855 standard, both of which are military specifications. M193 ammo typically fires a 55 grain full metal jacket bullet at 3,240 feet per second, while M855 ammo fires a heavier 62 grain FMJ bullet at about 3,100 feet per second. These common standards are very helpful when sighting in your optics and you'll find both cartridges in-stock and available in cheap bulk packs here at Widener's

Certain specialized loads deviate from these common standards. Competition grade .223/5.56 ammo fires a heavier bullet (most commonly a Sierra MatchKing) in the 77 grain range to provide better stability and more predictable trajectories; varmint loads, on the other hand, fire light 30-40 grain bullets at very high velocities to produce lethal fragmentation against pest animals.

One of the most sought after range loads for this caliber is Lake City ammunition, which is produced by Federal Premium Ammunition at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence, Missouri. LCAAP production is typically excess from government contracts and is popular due to its military origins and high quality.

Each round in this case of 500 (split into 10 boxes of 50 rounds each) fires a 55 grain boat-tailed full metal jacket bullet at a muzzle velocity of 3,240 feet per second. This produces ballistics similar to M193 ball ammo.

Hornady ammo is loaded in Grand Island, Nebraska and uses non-corrosive Boxer primers and reloadable brass cases.

Captain Kirk said space is the final frontier. Well, we’ve got an even better kind of frontier in our warehouse: Hornady Frontier. This 223 Rem ammo features the Nebraskan company’s high-quality bullets, and it is loaded in the heart of Missouri at the feds’ own Lake City Army Ammunition Plant.

Hornady’s full metal jacket projectile is nothing out of the ordinary – just an aerodynamic bolt of brass-jacketed lead, which hits a velocity of 3,240 fps out of a 24” barrel and doesn’t become slower than the speed of sound until about 700 yards. If you zero in at 100 yards, then the bullet’s trajectory should peak about 1/2” above the bore line before reaching the target.

This ammo’s military-grade cases aren’t reloaded. They were drawn, tapered, cut and annealed at Lake City’s own factory. The cases weren’t polished there, however, which is why the brass is darker around its neck and shoulder. No old primers here! Just the noncorrosive Boxers that’ll keep your rifle silky smooth.

This high quality Hornady ammo fires at 3240 feet per second, and with a 55 grain SP round traveling like that, you should have no problem wiping out those pesky varmints or putting pork on the table.

Frontier ammunition is loaded for Hornady by the U.S. government’s own Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence, Missouri. It’s high quality stuff – especially when Hornady arms it with their superior HP Match projectiles!

This round’s 55 grain hollow point is not designed to expand as it penetrates soft tissue. The narrow opening in its nose indicates that the bullet’s swaged lead core is perfectly form-fitted to its jacket, where it was poured into place. The HP Match’s evenly distributed core is complemented by Hornady’s signature AMP jacket, which is a virtually perfectly concentric copper shell.

This balanced bullet is also extremely aerodynamic. Its graceful secant ogive geometry gives way to a ballistically efficient boat tail. When the bullet is fired through a 24” barrel to achieve a G1 ballistic coefficient of 0.254, its velocity remains at least Mach 2 until it reaches the 275-yard line!

This ammo’s uniform brass cases ensure smooth cycling through any bolt-action or semi-auto, and its matched primers and propellant serve up consistent recoil and ballistics. One 500 round case is divided among 25 boxes, so you can pass some along to your range pals (but you won’t want to).

If you’ve got an AR-15, then you know how quickly the little thing can gobble up ammo. Keeping it in good supply of the stuff can be a challenge -- it’s not uncommon for an AR-15 owner to feel like a mother bird that has to perpetually stick worms down its fledgling’s gullet. When you need high quality rounds, you can always bank on Hornady. The old Nebraskan master has one of the tightest quality assurance protocols that we know about, and that really shows in their products’ consistently great performance.

This 223 Rem cartridge has a 55 grain projectile. The bullet’s jacket is drawn extremely concentrically, which along with its fast 3,240 fps muzzle velocity assures a flat and accurate trajectory. This bullet’s jacket further serves to promote certain feeding through a semi-automatic, and to prevent rapid fouling within the bore as well. This round’s military grade primer and propellant both burn clean to preserve a rifle’s action, and its brand new brass casing is ready for multiple trips across the reloading bench.

This 223 Rem ammo by Hornady Frontier is designed solely around accuracy. No varmint, predator or home intruder would sign up to get hit by its heavyweight 68 grain projectile, of course, but sharpshooters will find this ammo of especial value at the rifle range!

This cartridge showcases Hornady’s own BTHP Match bullet. Its Advanced Manufacturing Process jacket possesses virtually zero flaws in its concentricity, and its form-fitted swaged lead core only serves to further heighten its rotational stability. The BTHP Match’s secant ogive profile also promotes better balance, and alongside its tapered base ensures the bullet retains sufficient momentum to achieve an impressive 0.355 G1 ballistic coefficient.

This round’s 2,960 fps muzzle velocity was recorded using a 24” barrel. A 1:8” twist barrel is optimal for a 68 grain bullet like this, but you’ll certainly get by with a 1:9” or 1:7” twist as well. Although a hollow point by design, the BTHP Match is not engineered to deliver terminal expansion.

This Frontier label ammo is loaded with military-grade brass cases, Boxer primers and clean-burning powder. The cases are brand new, visibly annealed and perfect for handloading!

Hornady teamed up with the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant to create this 5.56x45 Frontier cartridge. That means you get to benefit from the work of one of the finest military-grade ammunition producers in the whole world! This round’s brass casing is top notch stuff, the kind you can depend on to cycle efficiently and be of great value time and time again at your reloading bench. Lake City’s state of the industry loading process yielded an intensely reliable primer and propellant charge for this round as well, and their intensive quality assurance protocol ensured that everything came together perfectly for your hungry rifle.

Hornady would never let anyone else make one of their bullets, though -- that’s their forte. As such this round’s 68 grain projectile features its maker’s signature AMP jacket, which has virtually zero variation in its concentricity, as well as a swaged lead core, ballistically efficient boat tail, and perfectly centered hollow point meplat. This is a bullet that begs to be used in a competition, although for the round’s price tag you won’t mind doing whatever you like with it!

Hornady’s Frontier line of ammunition is all about versatility. They boast, rightly, that a Frontier round is the one to reach for whether you would spend your afternoon plinking, target shooting, and training for law enforcement. It’s also in no way inadequate (and in fact excellent for) hunting and self-defense as well. Combined with its reasonable price, this one-size-fits-all brand is great for shooters who appreciate the opportunity to familiarize themselves with one cartridge’s performance as intimately as they can.

This 5.56x45mm cartridge features a 75 grain projectile. Its boat tail design greatly increases its ballistic coefficient to raise its accuracy, flatten its trajectory, and improve its performance in windy environments. Because the bullet is also a hollow point, it will expand to create a deep and wide wound channel in soft targets.

Frontier ammunition further offers reloadable brass casings and military grade Boxer primers and propellant. Hornady’s meticulous manufacturing process sees to it that each and every Frontier round is loaded to consistent specifications, and their quality assurance protocol ensures that they’re all flawless before exiting their factory’s doors.

    Customer Reviews

Hot and accurate with minor quality issues...

Tried this out in my 26", 8 twist, 223 Wylde bolt gun and was surprised to get .55-.65" groups. Even more amazed the velocity was 2916 fps with a 34 ES. This has to be at the hot end of the load data so be sure you have a rifle that can take it. Much cheaper, faster, and just as accurate as Magtech 77gr. Only negative was several rounds had some good dents in the shoulder area, so watch out for quality issues.

“Ten bullets through one hole.” Joyce Hornady's famous five words are inspirational, and they remain the basis for everything his company does over seven decades after he founded it.

This is Hornady’s American Gunner ammunition. Made in Nebraska. Premium reloadable brass cases. Super trustworthy primers. Propellant that won’t have you spending ages cleaning your rifle after target practice is over. Reliable functionality in all makes and models of firearms. These are all the patents of quality you should expect from any of Hornady’s fine ammo.

But the hollow point bullet is something extra special. That 55 grain projectile features a jacket with nigh perfect concentricity, which alongside its form-fitted rearward situated lead core ensures exemplary rotational stability and accuracy. So long as you don’t expect terminal expansion from the HP, it’s due to exceed your expectations.

Hornady recorded this round’s 3,240 fps muzzle velocity and its flat base bullet’s 0.254 G1 ballistic coefficient with a 24” test barrel. That translates to a trajectory which elevates 2.17” above the bore line while you’re aiming to 200 yards.
