223 (5.56) Ammo

.223 Remington ammunition and 5.56x45 NATO are closely related and sometimes interchangeable cartridges depending on the firearm they are to be used with. Manufacturers typically offer guidance on this point. In general, the 5.56 NATO ammunition the military uses and is for sale to the civilian market operates at higher pressures than .223 Remington ammo. Most, but not all, AR-15s are chambered for 5.56 NATO and can fire both types of ammo.

Many loads in both calibers follow the M193 or M855 standard, both of which are military specifications. M193 ammo typically fires a 55 grain full metal jacket bullet at 3,240 feet per second, while M855 ammo fires a heavier 62 grain FMJ bullet at about 3,100 feet per second. These common standards are very helpful when sighting in your optics and you'll find both cartridges in-stock and available in cheap bulk packs here at Widener's

Certain specialized loads deviate from these common standards. Competition grade .223/5.56 ammo fires a heavier bullet (most commonly a Sierra MatchKing) in the 77 grain range to provide better stability and more predictable trajectories; varmint loads, on the other hand, fire light 30-40 grain bullets at very high velocities to produce lethal fragmentation against pest animals.

One of the most sought after range loads for this caliber is Lake City ammunition, which is produced by Federal Premium Ammunition at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence, Missouri. LCAAP production is typically excess from government contracts and is popular due to its military origins and high quality.

Each round in this case of 500 (split into 10 boxes of 50 rounds each) fires a 55 grain boat-tailed full metal jacket bullet at a muzzle velocity of 3,240 feet per second. This produces ballistics similar to M193 ball ammo.

Hornady ammo is loaded in Grand Island, Nebraska and uses non-corrosive Boxer primers and reloadable brass cases.

Captain Kirk said space is the final frontier. Well, we’ve got an even better kind of frontier in our warehouse: Hornady Frontier. This 223 Rem ammo features the Nebraskan company’s high-quality bullets, and it is loaded in the heart of Missouri at the feds’ own Lake City Army Ammunition Plant.

Hornady’s full metal jacket projectile is nothing out of the ordinary – just an aerodynamic bolt of brass-jacketed lead, which hits a velocity of 3,240 fps out of a 24” barrel and doesn’t become slower than the speed of sound until about 700 yards. If you zero in at 100 yards, then the bullet’s trajectory should peak about 1/2” above the bore line before reaching the target.

This ammo’s military-grade cases aren’t reloaded. They were drawn, tapered, cut and annealed at Lake City’s own factory. The cases weren’t polished there, however, which is why the brass is darker around its neck and shoulder. No old primers here! Just the noncorrosive Boxers that’ll keep your rifle silky smooth.

Here’s the problem: You ain’t got no 223 Rem ammo.
Here’s the solution: Hornady Frontier 223 Rem ammo!

Hornady is one of America’s most highly respected bullet artisans. Their projectiles are prized by handloading enthusiasts across the country – but you don’t have to be a handloader to make good use of them. Here’s your chance to appreciate Hornady’s high-quality full metal jacket in action, right out of the box!

This cartridge’s 55 grain FMJ is nonmagnetic, smooth-feeding, aerodynamic, and not much else. It’s ideal for target shooting and other scenarios where terminal expansion would provide no real advantage. An FMJ won’t deliver quite as dramatic terminal ballistics as a V-MAX or other similar polymer-tipped projectile, but it’s still plenty effective for tagging small game. Shoot that pesky porcupine before it can get to your poor, innocent dog!

This ammo is loaded by the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant – same outfit that makes most of the small arms materiel for the U.S. Armed Forces. Noncorrosive Boxer primers. Factory-fresh brass cases, which weren’t polished after they were heat-treated and are therefore darker-colored around their necks and shoulders. Hornady recorded this round’s muzzle velocity and 0.243 G1 BC with a 24” test barrel.

Want to handload those cases? Check out our selection of .224” component bullets!

Frontier ammunition is loaded for Hornady by the U.S. government’s own Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence, Missouri. It’s high quality stuff – especially when Hornady arms it with their superior HP Match projectiles!

This round’s 55 grain hollow point is not designed to expand as it penetrates soft tissue. The narrow opening in its nose indicates that the bullet’s swaged lead core is perfectly form-fitted to its jacket, where it was poured into place. The HP Match’s evenly distributed core is complemented by Hornady’s signature AMP jacket, which is a virtually perfectly concentric copper shell.

This balanced bullet is also extremely aerodynamic. Its graceful secant ogive geometry gives way to a ballistically efficient boat tail. When the bullet is fired through a 24” barrel to achieve a G1 ballistic coefficient of 0.254, its velocity remains at least Mach 2 until it reaches the 275-yard line!

This ammo’s uniform brass cases ensure smooth cycling through any bolt-action or semi-auto, and its matched primers and propellant serve up consistent recoil and ballistics. One 500 round case is divided among 25 boxes, so you can pass some along to your range pals (but you won’t want to).

If you’ve got an AR-15, then you know how quickly the little thing can gobble up ammo. Keeping it in good supply of the stuff can be a challenge -- it’s not uncommon for an AR-15 owner to feel like a mother bird that has to perpetually stick worms down its fledgling’s gullet. When you need high quality rounds, you can always bank on Hornady. The old Nebraskan master has one of the tightest quality assurance protocols that we know about, and that really shows in their products’ consistently great performance.

This 223 Rem cartridge has a 55 grain projectile. The bullet’s jacket is drawn extremely concentrically, which along with its fast 3,240 fps muzzle velocity assures a flat and accurate trajectory. This bullet’s jacket further serves to promote certain feeding through a semi-automatic, and to prevent rapid fouling within the bore as well. This round’s military grade primer and propellant both burn clean to preserve a rifle’s action, and its brand new brass casing is ready for multiple trips across the reloading bench.

This 223 Rem ammo by Hornady Frontier is designed solely around accuracy. No varmint, predator or home intruder would sign up to get hit by its heavyweight 68 grain projectile, of course, but sharpshooters will find this ammo of especial value at the rifle range!

This cartridge showcases Hornady’s own BTHP Match bullet. Its Advanced Manufacturing Process jacket possesses virtually zero flaws in its concentricity, and its form-fitted swaged lead core only serves to further heighten its rotational stability. The BTHP Match’s secant ogive profile also promotes better balance, and alongside its tapered base ensures the bullet retains sufficient momentum to achieve an impressive 0.355 G1 ballistic coefficient.

This round’s 2,960 fps muzzle velocity was recorded using a 24” barrel. A 1:8” twist barrel is optimal for a 68 grain bullet like this, but you’ll certainly get by with a 1:9” or 1:7” twist as well. Although a hollow point by design, the BTHP Match is not engineered to deliver terminal expansion.

This Frontier label ammo is loaded with military-grade brass cases, Boxer primers and clean-burning powder. The cases are brand new, visibly annealed and perfect for handloading!

This Frontier label 223 Rem ammunition by Hornady is great for all the long-distance shooters out there. It showcases the Nebraskan master’s HP Match, which is basically 55 grains of nothing but accuracy-enhancing features.

The HP Match’s swaged lead core is highly uniform, and doesn’t possess air pockets that could impact its balance. Its AMP jacket is drawn with virtually zero runout or variations in its wall thickness. The HP Match is also extremely sleek, from its narrow meplat to its secant ogive geometry to its sloping boat tail.

This round’s HP Match bursts out of a 24” barrel at a velocity of 3,240 fps. So well-balanced and streamlined a bullet exhibits a G1 BC of 0.254, and can be counted on to remain supersonic beyond 700 yards. Whether you’re shooting targets or varmints, so flat a trajectory is certain to come in very handy.

The Lake City Army Ammunition Plant loads this AR-15 ammo. Widener’s customers who can’t get enough brass are sure to find a good use for this ammo’s new production cases, which are visibly annealed and long-lasting. Lake City’s military-grade primers, propellant and loading practices deliver reliable performance however you shoot!

Hornady teamed up with the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant to create this 5.56x45 Frontier cartridge. That means you get to benefit from the work of one of the finest military-grade ammunition producers in the whole world! This round’s brass casing is top notch stuff, the kind you can depend on to cycle efficiently and be of great value time and time again at your reloading bench. Lake City’s state of the industry loading process yielded an intensely reliable primer and propellant charge for this round as well, and their intensive quality assurance protocol ensured that everything came together perfectly for your hungry rifle.

Hornady would never let anyone else make one of their bullets, though -- that’s their forte. As such this round’s 68 grain projectile features its maker’s signature AMP jacket, which has virtually zero variation in its concentricity, as well as a swaged lead core, ballistically efficient boat tail, and perfectly centered hollow point meplat. This is a bullet that begs to be used in a competition, although for the round’s price tag you won’t mind doing whatever you like with it!

Are you out of 223 Rem ammo? We hate to hear it. But we also love to hear it, because that means you have a perfect opportunity to give Hornady BLACK a college try. Designed in Nebraska to work without fail in all makes, models and styles of 223/5.56 firearms, these range loads are sure to treat you to loads of fun!

This cartridge’s bullet weighs 62 grains, but make no mistake: neither its lead core nor its copper-alloy jacket contain one iota of steel. The nonmagnetic bullet does achieve a muzzle velocity of 3,100 fps, however, which makes its ballistic performance not totally unlike that of the U.S. Army’s 5.56 M855 round. If you fire the FMJ out of the 24” barrel it needs to reach its posted muzzle velocity, then its 0.274 G1 BC will enable it to fly to 200 yards without going higher than 2.3” above the bore line (and that’s not taking sight height into account). The slightly heavier bullet will give you a welcome advantage if you have to deal with wind deflection!

Each BLACK round comes to the party with a virgin polished brass case – just swell if you love handloading every empty shell you come across – as well as a clean-sparking primer/propellant combo. Ten boxes per case. Order today! Time and tide wait for no man.

Hornady’s Frontier line of ammunition is all about versatility. They boast, rightly, that a Frontier round is the one to reach for whether you would spend your afternoon plinking, target shooting, and training for law enforcement. It’s also in no way inadequate (and in fact excellent for) hunting and self-defense as well. Combined with its reasonable price, this one-size-fits-all brand is great for shooters who appreciate the opportunity to familiarize themselves with one cartridge’s performance as intimately as they can.

This 5.56x45mm cartridge features a 75 grain projectile. Its boat tail design greatly increases its ballistic coefficient to raise its accuracy, flatten its trajectory, and improve its performance in windy environments. Because the bullet is also a hollow point, it will expand to create a deep and wide wound channel in soft targets.

Frontier ammunition further offers reloadable brass casings and military grade Boxer primers and propellant. Hornady’s meticulous manufacturing process sees to it that each and every Frontier round is loaded to consistent specifications, and their quality assurance protocol ensures that they’re all flawless before exiting their factory’s doors.

    Customer Reviews

Hot and accurate with minor quality issues...

Tried this out in my 26", 8 twist, 223 Wylde bolt gun and was surprised to get .55-.65" groups. Even more amazed the velocity was 2916 fps with a 34 ES. This has to be at the hot end of the load data so be sure you have a rifle that can take it. Much cheaper, faster, and just as accurate as Magtech 77gr. Only negative was several rounds had some good dents in the shoulder area, so watch out for quality issues.

“Ten bullets through one hole.” Joyce Hornady's famous five words are inspirational, and they remain the basis for everything his company does over seven decades after he founded it.

This is Hornady’s American Gunner ammunition. Made in Nebraska. Premium reloadable brass cases. Super trustworthy primers. Propellant that won’t have you spending ages cleaning your rifle after target practice is over. Reliable functionality in all makes and models of firearms. These are all the patents of quality you should expect from any of Hornady’s fine ammo.

But the hollow point bullet is something extra special. That 55 grain projectile features a jacket with nigh perfect concentricity, which alongside its form-fitted rearward situated lead core ensures exemplary rotational stability and accuracy. So long as you don’t expect terminal expansion from the HP, it’s due to exceed your expectations.

Hornady recorded this round’s 3,240 fps muzzle velocity and its flat base bullet’s 0.254 G1 ballistic coefficient with a 24” test barrel. That translates to a trajectory which elevates 2.17” above the bore line while you’re aiming to 200 yards.

The American frontier is gone, but Hornady Frontier keeps going strong! This is the 223 Rem ammo you want to chamber when accuracy is key – grouping tight shots through paper, or landing a single bullet clean between a gopher’s peepers.

Hornady utilizes the industry’s most advanced loading equipment and protocol when they piece together a Frontier load. This American-made ammo’s brass cases are military-grade, and you can see by their annealing that they’re poised to reload several times. This ammo’s primers are also military-grade, which promotes consistent ballistics along with its uniform propellant charges and bullet weights.

Each bullet is Hornady’s accurate BTHP Match. It features its manufacturer’s Advanced Manufacturing Process jacket and a form-fitted swaged lead core, both of which enhance in-flight stability to ensure the meplat is always pointed at its target. The BTHP Match’s secant ogive profile, boat tail and narrow hollow point meplat all decrease in-flight drag to flatten trajectory. Zero in at 200 yards and you can expect only 7.5” of bullet drop at 300!

The BTHP Match’s hollow point doesn’t affect terminal ballistics by creating expansion. The impact of a 68 grain bullet alone ought to take care of most varmint hunting and self-defense applications, though.

    Customer Reviews

    Good Quality and Great Service

After spending a couple of hours looking for a decent price on 68 grain .223 BTHP ammo that was in stock, I finally found Widener's site, and they actually had it in stock. This ammo is pricy everywhere, but Widener's had it available for about a nickel per round below the next best price. I immediately placed an order, and the shipment showed up two days before I expected it. I will definitely look forward to looking to Widener's when I've saved up enough money for another purchase.

Hornady is one of America’s leading bullet manufacturers, and they load ammunition with the same love and care that they spend on each and every projectile. Their BLACK series 5.56x45 ammunition makes the perfect companion during any range day, as it’s loaded with the high-quality components and tight specs any rifle needs in order to do its best work.

Hornady loads this ammo so you can have the same recoil and trajectory that the U.S. Army’s M855 cartridge would have provided – without the magnetic bullet. Cut Hornady’s 62 grain FMJ in half and you’ll find a lead core, copper alloy, and no steel penetrator insert. The non-expanding FMJ’s mid-jacket cannelure effectively prevents setback in the magazine that could have interrupted feeding or thrown off seating depth.

BLACK ammo is loaded with reloadable brass cases. Its non-corrosive Boxer primers are sealed for added longevity in storage, and its propellant is consistently loaded to deliver a 3,060 fps muzzle velocity (20” test barrel), just like the M855.

This 5.56x45 cartridge is from Hornady’s Frontier line of ammunition, and was manufactured at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant to provide cost-effective but still admirable performance out of any rifle you could chamber it in. Its 75 grain projectile provides match grade accuracy thanks in large part to its boat tail design, which reduces the amount of turbulence it leaves in its wake during flight to flatten its trajectory and permit it to retain a greater part of its velocity after having traveled great distances. This bullet further sports a narrow hollow point meplat to improve its resistance to wind deflection.

Given its place of manufacture, this round features military grade components to complement its bullet’s high level performance. Its factory fresh brass casing is very durable with an annealed neck and shoulder, and able to withstand being reloaded multiple times. Its Boxer primer is extremely sensitive and non-corrosive, and its powder burns without producing harmful residues as well.

The American Frontier no longer exists, but Hornady Frontier is alive and well. We’ve got a bunch of it in our warehouse, as a matter of fact, and it’s ready for action whether you’ve got long-distance shooting, varmint detail or home defense in your plans!

This 5.56x45 cartridge is designed to turn any AR-15 into a capable sniper rifle. It’s furnished with a heavyweight 68 grain bullet. It’ll stabilize best out of a rifle with a 1:8 barrel twist, but a little faster or slower twist will be okay as well. As a boat tail hollow point this bullet features a ballistically efficient profile and balanced, uniformly distributed lead core. It won’t expand inside of its target, but it’s certain to get there courtesy of its match grade accuracy.

Frontier ammo is non-corrosive, nonmagnetic, and made in America. This ammo’s military-grade brass cases are consistently drawn and chambered to help them reliably weave in and out of a chamber, and you can rest assured they’re good for handloading.

If you are looking for reliable and effective ammunition for your training and target-shooting needs, this 20-count box will deliver the performance you expect. Loaded with 62-grain full metal jacket bullets, these rounds give you better cycling from the magazine to the chamber and leave less fouling in the barrel. For a full day of target shooting, a few boxes of these targets will do the trick.

The full metal jacket bullet is one of the most popular projectiles for high-volume target practice. Because the bullet is wrapped in metal, the lead core does not leave a fouling residue in the barrel. Through hundreds of shots, you’ll have much better accuracy, helping you compete or train at the highest level.

Hornady is a cartridge company that has been serving American gun owners since 1949. Based out of Nebraska, this company originally made bullets but now has a wide variety of complete cartridges for rifles, handguns, and shotguns.

A short-barreled rifle (SBR) is an excellent tool for personal defense. But if your barrel measures between 10.5” and 11.5”, then you would be well advised to select ammo which is specially intended for it.

Hornady’s BLACK series 5.56x45 ammo is loaded with the 75 grain InterLock HD SBR. It excels at initiating expansion flowing low-velocity impact courtesy of its exposed supple lead tip and grooved, tapered jacket. It also has the durability it needs to defeat a wide variety of common barriers thanks to its cannelure and InterLock ring, which doubly anchor its jacket and core together. Hornady designed the InterLock HD SBR to excel at the FBI test protocol for self-defense ammo. They succeeded.

This ammo’s powder is similarly engineered to supply optimal functionality in SBRs. It minimizes blinding muzzle flash, softens report to an impressive degree, produces extremely little fouling, and does not overheat a suppressor. Hornady’s best brass cases feed without hesitation, and their Boxer primers are intensely reliable.

Hornady also recommends this ammo for medium game. A great choice for a midnight boar bonanza!

Turn your AR-15, Mini-14, or other .223 Rem/5.56 NATO rifle into a fearsome varmint exterminator with this .223 Remington ammo from Hornady's Varmint Express series. These cartridges are loaded with V-MAX hollow point bullets with an aerodynamic polymer tip. V-MAX projectiles are designed to fragment rapidly to exterminate groundhogs, nutria, coyotes, and other pest animals.

Each cartridge in this bulk priced case of 200 fires a 55-grain bullet at a muzzle velocity of 3,240 feet per second. This results in trajectories similar to M193 mil-spec ball; for a varmint load, this ammo fires a relatively heavy bullet suitable for larger targets. The ballistic similarities between this ammo and common range loads makes for easy transitions between target shooting and hunting applications.

Hornady ammunition is produced in Grand Island, Nebraska using reloadable brass and non-corrosive primers. Originally founded in the 1940s as a manufacturer of high-end bullets, Hornady branched out into loaded ammo in the 1980s and offers products for defense, hunting, and competition use.

Hornady continues its long history of innovation in the ammo industry with Superformance cartridges, which feature efficient propellants capable of producing higher muzzle velocities without an increase in barrel fouling or wear. Unsurprisingly, this advance is a great fit for varmint loads, which rely on velocity to produce pest-killing fragmentation.

Each .223 Remington cartridge in this case of 200 fires a 53 grain Hornady V-MAX polymer-tipped hollow point bullet at 3,465 feet per second.

This ammo is loaded in Grand Island, Nebraska using reloadable brass and non-corrosive primers.

This 200-round case of 5.56mm NATO ammunition is a great purchase for competitive match use or for testing out a new high-class build from Desert Tech or LaRue Tactical. Each round utilizes a 75-grain hollow point boat tail (HPBT) projectile which exhibits superb accuracy due to its measured internal balance, consistent outer dimensions, and aerodynamic shape. In addition, a toothed cannelure keeps the heavyweight bullet firmly seated within its crimp so that recoil vibrations don't upset final shot placement.

The reloadable brass casing of each cartridge is filled with a potent charge with powder, like all Superformance rounds, which produces breathtaking muzzle velocity for flatter shooting out to greater distances. This propellant accepts a spark from a non-corrosive Boxer primer which is accompanied by sealant that prevents moisture from ruining its ignition quality. Hornady's projectiles and finished ammo are supported by expertise that dates back all the way to 1949.

You’re not messing around. You’re going to prove that “effective range” is merely a concept by covering insane distances with your 223 Rem rifle – and Hornady Superformance is precisely the 223 Rem ammo you need to do it!

This cartridge is loaded with a big boy 75 grain projectile. That extra mass equals greater inertia, ergo higher resistance to wind deflection hundreds of yards downrange. As a hollow point boat tail, the bullet possesses the form-fitted lead core it needs to exhibit formidable rotational stability and the tapered base that helps to conserve momentum.

Whereas your run of the mill 223 round’s 55gr FMJ achieves a G1 ballistic coefficient of 0.243, this round’s tack driver of a 75gr HPBT has a G1 BC of 0.395. In other words, its trajectory will peak at about 5.23” before it reaches a 300-yard bullseye (assuming your rifle has a 24” barrel, which is the test barrel length Hornady used to record this round’s 2,930 fps muzzle velocity, and your sights are set 1.5” high).

Hornady’s Superformance Match series ammo achieves a muzzle velocity that’s about 200 fps higher – without producing more unwanted recoil, muzzle blast, fouling or chamber pressure in the process. This ammo hails from Nebraska, where Hornady loaded it with their highest-quality reloadable brass cases and primers.

Please note: Despite its appearance, the HPBT will not deliver terminal expansion. It is solely designed for accuracy.

This .223 Remington ammo from Hornady's Varmint Express series delivers excellent performance against larger varmints as well as coyotes and other predators. These cartridges feature Hornady V-MAX polymer tipped hollow point bullets, which deliver excellent accuracy and fragment rapidly upon contact with an animal to effect a quick, clean kill with less risk of overpenetration.

Each cartridge in this box of 20 fires a 55-grain version of the V-MAX at a muzzle velocity of 3,240 feet per second. Compared to other varmint loads, this ammo fires a relatively heavy bullet at a medium velocity, producing external ballistics comparable to those of M193 ball. This is a plus for shooters who prefer minimal optics adjustment when transitioning between target shooting and hunting, and it enhances the load's terminal performance against larger animals.

Hornady ammo is loaded in Grand Island, Nebraska using non-corrosive Boxer primers and reloadable brass.

This 223 Rem cartridge from Hornady’s Critical Defense line of ammunition features a 73 grain FTX projectile. The heavy FTX is able to penetrate deeply, and is prevented from shedding very much of its weight during penetration by its InterLock ring. The FTX’s secant ogive profile grants it the ballistic coefficient needed for accuracy at longer ranges. The FTX’s Flex Tip reliably initiates powerful expansion even at lower velocities, and additionally serves to protect the hollow point from clogging with fabric and other media.

A Critical Defense cartridge’s factory fresh brass casing is plated with nickel, which enhances its ability to cycle seamlessly through a semi-automatic weapon and safeguards it against corrosion caused by atmospheric moisture. If you ever have to engage a threat in the nighttime, you’ll appreciate how this round’s low-flash propellant emits little light when ignited, protecting your vision so you can continue firing accurately.

This 223 Rem cartridge from Hornady’s Critical Defense line of ammunition is optimized in every way to help you keep your home uninfluenced by burglars. The round’s 55 grain FTX projectile features the Flex Tip, which compresses into the bullet upon impact in order to initiate rapid expansion. The Flex Tip works reliably even at lower velocities, and optimizes performance in lever action rifles as well.

The FTX bullet also features an InterLock ring, which mechanically locks its high antimony lead core and specially engineered heavy jacket together to provide stellar weight retention during penetration. This bullet additionally offers a flat trajectory and great accuracy thanks to its secant ogive profile.

Thanks to this round’s casing’s nickel plating, it’s very easy to spot during a chamber check in a darkened environment. Furthermore, its specially formulated propellant reduces both recoil and muzzle flash, so you can count on firing rapid follow-up shots in the dark as well.
