222 Bullets
222 Remington bullets --- Introduced as part of America’s first rimless cartridge in 1950, it was a mainstay in the target shooting scene until its popularity gradually tapered off in the 1970s. (Its case would eventually serve as the basis for the 223 Rem.) Today, the 222 Rem remains a favorite among many varmint hunters, but its relative scarcity in America means you had better handload if you’re going to master the round’s performance.
With its case that accommodates 27 grains, a 222 Rem can achieve muzzle velocities ranging from around 2,600 to 3,400 fps depending on propellant charge and bullet weight. The .224” bullet commonly belongs to one of five weight classes: 34/35 grain, 40 grain, 50/52 grain, 55 grain, and 60 grain. Enthusiast can enjoy loading a variety of the leading manufacturers’ bullets including Ballistic Tip, V-MAX, BlitzKing, TSX, and Varmint Grenade.
The 222 Rem’s tack driving accuracy, light recoil, and fast velocity all make it a fine choice for ground squirrels up to coyote. Whether it’s an ideal round for medium game is still the subject of debate, although its comfortable recoil makes it a natural selection for younger shooters whose frames can’t soak up too much kick. Regardless of its velocity or weight the 222 Rem’s bullet can not be counted upon to conquer even a smaller deer’s shoulder blade, so taking advantage of its superior accuracy to strike a vital organ is key.

Shot 2 coyotes and neither bullet exited. Instant kills.

Besides the two coyotes I shot last year with the 22-250, previously shot groundhogs without exit holes. Very small groups with Varget and H4895
